Identity theft is among one of the most debilitating mental game issues amongst all athletes and poker players. Over time, the pursuit of success had a tendency to make us lose sight of WHO we are as a person, not what we have or have not achieved.
The more serious we are about our chosen sport/game, the more personally we take our results which over time, can then manifest into a process of our identity is created by what results we have achieved.
I can tell you that there is NO positive result of this process. Even if you have achieved some great results, when your results enevitably plateu, you will struggle to emotional deal with the situation, as your identity has been created by achieving great result.
If your identity has been created from poor results, this heavily impacts your self worth and belief systems. You will begin to perceive you are NO good at anything and uncapable of achieving success no matter what you put your mind too.
This process happens as we are emotionally attached/invested in the results which then becomes very difficult to not let our results have an impact on our emotions and belief system's in a negative way.
The most important thing to do here is to ensure you seperate WHO you are from WHAT you do!
No matter what sport/game you play, this should be ONLY what you do and not in anyway shape of form WHO you are. If you can seperate the 2, you then give yourself a chance to not let your results impact your life outside of your sport/game in a negative way.
One of the biggest problems in regards to being able to achieve this state, is for a high percentage of society, they have never gone through the process of learning WHO they are as individuals. Whenever I work with a client , I will enevitably get to the question of asking them Who Are You, in which in excess of 70% of the time I get a confused look.
This is a major reason why we lose our identity as a person, as we never really owned our identity to begin with. This same principle applies no matter what industry you are in and Identity Theft is common amongst the business world as well.
I want you to have a good think about whether you have ever taken onwership of Who You Are as a person?
What personality traits do you have?
What are your hobbies?
What are your morals?
All these things make up Who You Are and once these aspects are owned, you put yourself in a position where you have control over Who You Are and not let your results, society or what other people think have an impact on how you feel about Who You Are!
First step, think about Who You Are as a person, then take complete ownership over these attributes no matter what results you have. Clarifying to yourself Who You Are and what actions you need to take to align with this person, is one of the most empowering experiences we can have, so I recommend going through this process and as I understand how difficult this process can be, please email me if you have any questions at all- jamie@dare2dream.com.au.
