I must admit, being a Mental Game Coach to poker players is certainly a challenging role for me. In the past, I have specialized in working with elite athletes and golfer's, who will leave NO stone unturned to become the very best they can be.
At times, poker players can be very blasé' about how they approach their poker and in turn, play a massive role in sabotaging their success as a poker player.
Consistency is really not a word I have found to be one that a lot of poker players live by, although there are a few players out there that have consistent positive habits, they would be in the minority. Most players get caught up in their results and search for the new theory/tool to help them become a winning player. Unfortunately, this is generally at the detriment of re-programming any new empowering behaviors.
I see a lot of poker player’s behaviors both on and off the felt, being impacted by how they are running right now. Their life and emotional state is heavily dictated by their results, which is an extremely difficult thing to balance, as a player has very little impact on the final result of a hand/session or tournament.
Players that leave their emotional well being up to whether or not they had a good result, is living a life that is going to be full of extreme's, with very little balance at all.
This I believe is a major contributor to players experiencing a lack of motivation or productivity.
I mean, who would want to work so hard and leave your success or failure in the hands of another player or what card falls on the river?
Not Me!!!
That’s why we have to begin to focus on specific processes everyday that we know will help us become the best player we can be, irrespective of the end result. The more focused you become on these processes every day, the more you will begin to ingrain a feeling of KNOWING that your day will come and over a large volume of hands, you will become a WINNING player.
This way, you leave YOUR success up to YOU, something that you have 100% CONTROL over. If you can sit there at the end of a session and say to yourself, "Today I played great and did everything I needed to, to help me WIN", then you have taken control of the most important component of the game- YOU!!!
Stop the searching, everything you need, to be the best player you can be is RIGHT HERE!!
Take control of YOU and you will begin to turn potential into SUCCESS!!
