I have found over the past 10 years as a mental game coach, and even the 15 years before that as an athlete, that even if we put the right work in and do all the right things, that we are not guaranteed that we will get the rewards of the fine work that we put in.
But I have also found, that those that are strong enough to continue on the right path, working hard and not letting the lack of rewards in the early stages deter them from their focus, will ALWAYS get rewarded.
There are 2 major aspects that get in the way of people achieving their peak performance. One of these is impatience. Human's are generally very impatient creatures and when they are not achieving the results they perceive they should be early on, will most likely search for an alternative way to do things. The biggest issue here is that it may take anywhere between 4-12 weeks for these new behavours to become automatic, where most people will change processes within the first 2-3 weeks. This process that feels like a revolving door, if you have been looking to achieve a certain level over the past few years, but feel like you are almost in the same place you were 12 months ago, I would say take a look at how consistent you have been in regards to what processes you have been focused on.
The 2nd aspect fits in very closely with the impatience, and that is Focus. Once your impatience kicks in, you begin to lose focus on the current plan and process to success, at times making unconscious changes without even really knowing you are making them.
Having these processes written down in front of you, helps you to ingrain these processes deep in your subconscious, allowing you to stay focused on these everyday. This also helps increase your awareness which is one of the most under rated skills in a person when it comes to achieving success.
The better quality awareness you have, the better quality your decisions will be on both sticking to a consistant process, as well as fine tuning things along the way.
I recommend that you build and create a Success Plan. This is a plan of all the things you have to do daily that will help you achieve success. The more specific this plan is the better. Once you have built that plan, WORK that plan.
PLAN YOUR WORK & WORK YOUR PLAN!!
This is something that 2 of my golf clients have done in recent years very well. Both going through different situations and circumstances, but sticking to their Success Plan helped them to ride the wave of pressure and expectations and achieve the results that they know they are capable of.
Grace Lennon, after struggling with some personal matters over the past few years, got her focus and dedication back to the game and just last week, won the NSW Amateur Championships. Grace had finished R/Up in 2 other state championships in the past, finally winning one after all she had been through is a testiment to her strength and courage.
Stacey Keating has just started her first year as a Pro on the Ladies European Tour and after missing her first few cuts, went onto score her mainden Top 10 in just her 7th event.
These results are a testiment to their work ethic and focus on their daily Success Plan and I am sure if you can begin to employ this level of patience and focus, you too will begin to experience the results that you know you are capable of!
What are you waiting for??
