Over the past 6 weeks I so, a large number of my clients and I have been going through a Goal Setting process that will help them clarify what they need to do in 2012 to achieve their goals at the end of the year. When going through goals with clients through the years, a high percentage of time there been a missing link that is a major key to helping them actually achieve these goals come the end of the year.
That missing link has been a list of specific daily tasks that they need to focus on that will help improve the quality of their games, that in turn will help them achieve a higher level of performance come competition time, and help them achieve a better quality result.
At times when we go through goal setting, the goals can lead us to ignore the specific tasks that we need to focus on that will help us improve the quality of our games. This can be because the goals that we write down are extremely exciting and rewarding and get lost in Dream mode, which is when we continue to Dream about achieving these goals and forget about what we need to in the HERE & NOW!
You see, your Goals & Dreams are made in the Here & Now!! Not in the past or the future, but in what you are completely focused on RIGHT NOW that will help you to improve your performance. Goal setting at times can be your worst enemy & your best friend, depending upon how you go about setting your goals.
I think its great that you have a list of Result Goals that you would like to achieve at the end of the year, but the key to making these goals become reality is a list of process or behavours that you can follow everyday that you KNOW will help you to become the best you can be.
A great way to start is to break your sport down into categories, for example-
*Technical
*Mental
*Physical
*Nutritional
Once you have the categories written down, write 3 specific aspects of what you need to focus on to help you improve that aspect of your game. What aspects of your technique do you have to improve? What exactly do you have to do to improve that component of your technique? What drills has your coach given you to improve that aspect?
If you can go through this process for each component of your game, then you will have a very clear path to follow that will get you moving closer to turning your goals and dreams into reality!
The secret in regards to this process is it improves one of the most important aspects of your performance without you really even knowing it. That aspect is your FOCUS!!
The quality of your focus is one of the, if not the most important aspect to you achieving success and this process helps you to take out the trash and fill your mind with quality thoughts and actions. If you can keep focused on these thoughts and actions for approximately 3 weeks, you will begin to feel empowered like never before, as you will feel a sense of control over your destiny and this is truly and amazing experience.
Take your time setting your goals and make sure that you set goals that might be a little outside your comfort zone, as the most rewarding goals to achieve are generally outside our comfort zones!
Believe in YOU, follow your processes that will take your focus to new heights and enjoy the challenge of being your ABSOLUTE BEST EVERYDAY!!
