Over the past few months, we have seen the world provide us with some devastating images and scenes that make you stop you in your tracks and hopefully, be thankful for everything you have in life. I have just spent the past week 10 days in Bali and I find when I am here, it has the same positive effect on my outlook to life.
Just before we got to Bali, we saw the devastating images from the Christ Church earthquake, which happened not long after the tragedy that was the QLD floods, having 2 such devastating events so close together was like getting punched in the side if the head with a sledge hammer. A real sense of being conscious to the way I live my life and whether or not I am fully in the moment, appreciating everything that I have and also accepting the challenges that I may be facing at present.
We all know life is not full of success, health and happiness for ourselves or those that are closest to us, everyday of our lives, so I feel that all of us that have success, health and happiness, right now, have a responsibility to live our lives with a level of appreciation and gratitude like never before.
I realised that for most of us, it takes a devastating event for us to begin to live life with an empowering mindset. I know for myself, when I went through my back injury, that when I was told I would never play sport again and possibly end up in a wheel chair, that I lived life at such a high quality from a mindset point of view, it was amazing!
Having the opportunity to spend 15 months lying on my back, gave me a great chance to really look into what my mindset was like when it came to the normal day to day aspects of life.
What was I like when something small didnt seem to go my way?
Well what I found was that I had very little patience when it came to the small things that didnt seem to go my way, and I find myself during the worlds devastating events, and when I visit Bali, to re visit that question of what is my mindset like to life?
I feel that I am pretty well trained in this aspect, but I also find everytime I ask myself this question, I find areas that I can dramatically improve and I think after the latest devastating world event, the earthquakes in Japan and the resulting Tsunami, that I feel I need to take my mindset to another level.
Even though Christ Church and QLD are closer to home for me, I have never been to Christ Church and only spent a small amount of time in QLD, it was the events in Japan that I felt rocked me into analysing my current attitude and mindset to life. I am sure that the fact that it happened while I was in Bali had a major influence on the level to which I have analysed my current mindset, as well as the fact that Jackie and I have visited Japan twice and absolutely loved it. The people and the City of Tokyo is an amazing place and to see the devastating images were gut wrenching to say the least.
I also have situations closer to home that are enough to make you sit there and appreciate the amazing things you have in your life. Like one of our best friends having been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour, my own mother fighting cancer as she has for what seems like the last 15 years.
Life is full of devastation and I am sure that there is no one in the world that can escape that devastation, so I am going to make sure that I live my life with gratitude and a sense of appreciation for everything in my life, no matter how small or large.
I have switched my mindset over the past few days and I can tell you it isnt easy, as behavouiral patterns are generally built so deep, that I will have to be on guard 24-7 to ensure that I begin the re programming phase successfully. I feel that I am not too far away from where I want to be, but I feel there are certain aspects that I have left out to ensure that I have this heightened level of gratitude and appreciation for my life EVERYDAY!!
One of the things that I have introduced is what I work on with my clients that I call a Post Day Routine. This PDR is focused on them acknowledging 10 aspects of what they did that day that they were proud of. I also get them to look at 3 aspects from that day that they would like to improve tomorrow. My clients will then re read these specific aspects the next morning before they start their day, giving them a great injection of high quality mindset and a sense of moving forward and improving.
I have started the same process. My point of focus will be more about how well I did in regards to appreciating my life and feeling gratitiude for all the things I have, as well as for all the great people I not only love, but get a chance to associate with.
I feel extremely lucky to live the life I live, to get paid to live my passion and travel to so many beautiful places, with my amazing soul mate, all these processes I get to call-MY LIFE!!
I hope that in 2011, whether it's for all the people devastated by the flood's, earthquake's or the Tsunami, that you can begin to live your life with a heightened level of appreciation and gratitude for what you have, as we never know when these things can be taken away from us and leave our world turned upside down!!
I ask, if not for you, then for all the lives lost and affected in these devastating events, that you begin to live your life with the gratitude and appreciation that it could all be taken away from you tomorrow- BECAUSE IT COULD!!
Maybe start with your own Post Day Routine, I know it has had an enormous impact on me already and the power of perspective, gratitude and thankfulness is an amazing thing:)
This picture has been hanging in one of my favourite cafe's in Bali forever-Love It!!
